Are you preparing for a newborn photo shoot session? Wondering the tips for what to wear for a newborn photo shoot? These tips will help you for a lifestyle newborn photo session.
What to Wear for a Newborn Photo Shoot
Your beautiful baby has arrived, and you are over the moon for them. You have the newborn session booked, Baby’s outfit is chosen, and the house is clean (enough!). However, one fear keeps looming – what are YOU going to wear?! I’m happy to help you figure that out!
Neutrals/light colors are always a winner for newborn sessions. Creams, grays, light blues, and soft pinks create an airy feel to your photos, and match with the softness of your little one. Stay away from large logos (or any writing, if you can help it), avoid black and neon colors to not overshadow the star of the show: your new baby!
Side note: if you are a major color-lover, don’t go neutral just because – be true to “you”! If your home is full of bright hues and rainbows are your jam, show that off in your session!
Mamas, wear what you feel best in. For our own newborn session, I wore solid black yoga pants and one of my favorite tops. We wanted the ‘lifestyle’ feel for our at-home shoot, so going barefoot with my comfortable (and flattering!) pants on was how I felt pretty and presentable! For you, it may be a flowy dress, a layered scarf, or even your favorite white tee. Whatever you choose, know that you look beautiful – and you have an absolutely wonderful reason to be doing a photo shoot!
As for dads, have him wear what is complimentary to your outfit. If you are wearing solids, he could wear something with a light pattern, like a sweater or button-down shirt. It’s ideal to coordinate, but not totally match for these photos. Denim shirts always look great!
If you have older children, feel free to dress them in interesting patterns! Stripes, checks, etc. can make things fun and show off the ‘family personality’.
I hope this gave you a little help in deciding what to wear for this special session! I know your pictures will look beautiful!

Hi! I really love your newborn photos and dressing recommendations. I was wondering if I could ask for your opinion on something. I’m due in October and have a family shoot scheduled for November. I was hoping to wear this dress https://www.hatchcollection.com/collections/all/products/the-nursing-slouch-dress-anise?variant=32069486215277?color=anise
My question is, do you think it’s too dark? Also, what colors would you suggest for my husband and newborn? I’m kind of stuck between cream/off-white or blue for my husband and maybe white onesie for the baby?

beautiful dress! love the color – I dont think it’s too dark if it coordinates with your style and home!
I think blues/whites/khakis or even grey would be fabulous with it!
Best luck and congrats!!!
