Senior Portrait Tips

As a senior photographer I want to make sure that I show off my senior’s true personality.  There are many ways to do this by using specific locations, poses and what to wear for senior pictures.  But one of the most unique ways to show off their personality is to include props in their senior portrait session.

By communicating with the senior about their hobbies, likes, and interests you will create the most unique senior pictures.  Creating an informational survey to have your senior fill out is a good way to learn about them.  The survey can be completed at the time of their consultation.  You can ask them what their favorite hobbies are, what kind of sports they are involved in, what kind of music they listen to, what kind of books they like to read, etc.  to create their very own Senior Portrait Prop Ideas. The options are endless when it comes to using props.  Some examples are:

  • Sports jersey
  • Sports equipment
  • Musical instruments
  • Books
  • Vehicles
  • Balloons
  • Flowers
  • Pets
  • Include the parents for suggestions and ideas of what personalized props would be good to use!

As a photographer there are many ways to obtain photography props.  Etsy and Amazon are great sites for ordering unique props.  If you are a photographer on a budget, you can check out your local thrift stores or ask friends and family members if they have the items you are looking for to borrow.  When it comes to larger props such as specific vehicles or even locations, you can ask different venders if they will let you rent for a few hours. For the crafty photographer, Pinterest is a great resource for DIY ideas for making senior props.

Where are good places for senior pictures?

The locations you choose for your senior photo shoots can also serve as senior portrait prop ideas.

  • Fields of sunflowers
  • A rocky stream
  • Steps in an alley
  • Barn door

Use your locations to provide unique settings that can showcase your senior’s personality.  When using the informational survey, you can get ideas of specific locations that the senior is interested in.  They might ask to use a favorite location such as their house, school, park, or a city.Senior Portrait Prop Ideas Senior Portrait Prop Ideas What to Wear for Senior Pictures

When should senior pictures be taken?

Seasons can provide beautiful props.

  • Snow in the winter
  • Flowers in spring and summer
  • Leaves in the fall can give the photographer a natural backdrop to work with.Senior Photography Posing Guide Senior Portrait Prop Ideas Senior Portrait Prop Ideas

I like to partner with our local fashion boutique to use their clothes and accessories for our creative portrait sessions with our seniors.  When you network with a boutique you can offer to advertise for them in exchange for using their merchandise as props.

By using props it gives the photographer a way to show their imagination and creativity in their work. It can also set you apart from other photographer’s.  Most seniors like to be different and have unique senior portraits.Senior Portrait Prop Ideas Unique Senior Picutres
