As a photographer the first question I get asked by moms and seniors is – What should I wear for senior pictures. Let me translate that – what they really want to know is what looks good in photographs for their senior pictures.
So I’m giving you some picture outfit ideas to help you choose wisely so your senior portraits will be stunning.
Senior Picture Outfit Ideas
1- I will be honest, not all colors and clothes look good in photographs. Consider your colors, textures, bulk, flow and realize that not all things photograph well. Not to mention if you don’t love your outfit please don’t even try to make it work! If you don’t love your outfit then your whole appearance and countenance with that outfit will show that it’s not your favorite! I promise!!!!!! If you love your outfit and you feel amazing in it, that will show through your pictures! You will be glowing and love that outfit/picture set.
2- Choose an outfit that is your Style but kick it up a notch Be yourself in your style but kick it up a notch. If you are a jeans and t shirt person…that’s ok just kick it up a notch. Get some new stylish jeans and a new t shirt that is a bit more than your normal go to. Consider going with jeans and a button down or a sleeveless relaxed top and cardigan. Just think past your normal everyday.
This image is a senior with shorts and a top – but look how much detail is in her top – it’s stunning!
3- Change up the Look – Don’t have every single outfit in jeans and a top…wear a dress, a pants outfit, shorts (if weather permits these in your area). You can even change it up by casual to dress-casual to dressy. Don’t have the same exact look for every outfit for every location.
4- Add accessories – You will be surprised what a blazer, a top hat, a fancy ring or statement necklace will do for your outfit and make it pop with personality! Grab a bouquet of flowers or wear a scarf…bring out the accessories to really create an outfit.
5- Don’t wear all white. It doesn’t photograph well or should I say easily – at least in my opinion, as a professional photographer for 10 years.
6- Don’t wear neon colors – again…It doesn’t photograph well or should I say easily – at least in my opinion, as a professional photographer for 10 years.
7- Shoes do matter! Don’t wear the same wedges for every outfit. Go to flats, wedges, to heels or even bare foot!
8- Find Unique Details in your Outfits! Consider a dress that has unique detail, not just plain and simple. I’m not saying it has to be over the top or fancy, rather some detail and character to it. Like this sweet girls dress!
9- Don’t go too stylish! I know that seems contrary…but stay classic yet stylish. This romper is classy, different and not over the top…just the right style and flavor to this photo. I go into a bit more depth here on What to Wear for Senior Pictures
9- Don’t wear it!
