What to wear for family photos is important for a great and successful photo session. Coordinating outfits, color schemes, matching outfits and best colors for photos is the key element when choosing what to wear for fall family photos or choosing what to wear for summer family pictures…no matter the season the principles are the same.

What to Wear for Family Photos

1. Limit Your Textures and Patterns – don’t go crazy with a lot of different patterns, rather limit yourself.
2. No Graphics or Characters – You know the t shirts that every kid loves to wear and pick out with the troll on the front..yeh no…not for family portraits!

3. Don’t Wear colors that don’t photograph well – i.e. black, white or neon colors.
4. Be sure your vibe is the same as your location for photos – If your fall family photo session is outdoors under oak trees consider a natural and simple look, if your fall family photos are on the beach consider a bit more of a fun and relaxed look.  The skinny of this is avoid a very formal look if you are going to the beach for fall family portraits – just coordinate your vibe and look.

5. Coordinate with your Home – Most clients recognize the need for family members’ outfits to coordinate with each other, but I encourage them to also consider how their clothes coordinate with their home decor. family picture color ideasThis might sound weird, but if you’re planning (as you should be!) to hang your family portraits on the walls of your home, these photos ARE your home decor. Of course you don’t have to “match” your wall color perfectly or anything, but at least don’t choose clothes (or locations!) with colors that clash with the color scheme of a room where your portraits might end up. It’ll make you more excited to frame them and display them!

6. Choose ONE outfit first– the person who’s hardest to shop for (usually Mom!) Then choose colors and patterns based on that outfit to create your perfect palette.  What to Wear for Fall Family Pictures
7. Make sure to COORDINATE your clothing
8. Don’t MATCH perfectly.
