DIY Small Space Kitchen Renovation

We are always up for a good little DIY project around our house. I mean after all, we are in year two of actually building our “big” house…so why would we not be the type to jump in and do a little refresher and pick-me-up in our little cottage.

Small Kitchen Makeovers Before and After

BEFORE PICTURE:

Spoiler Alert- AFTER shot!

You know that feeling you get when you have a new outfit on?  It’s refreshing, it makes you happy and you feel good.  Well it’s the same feeling for me when we update our living space.  A simple update can sure lift our spirits and our little cottage needed it!

I chose to focus on our kitchen and give it a tiny pick-me-up.  After all, this is where most of our memories are made as a family!  Like cooking pancakes together!

So off on a very cold day, the little and I headed to Lowe’s on a task to find the perfect cabinet color for our kitchen cottage…

Sometimes deciding what needs renovating, as well as what you want, can be the hard part!  With four on-trend 2018 Color Collections of the Year from HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams, it’s easier than ever to bring harmony to your home. Each Color Collection has a range of colors that go together in any combination, helping take the guesswork out of choosing color and giving your home a sense of room-to-room harmony. These four trending Color Collections are unique to HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams with palettes of 8 colors that work together in any combination!! All you have to do is choose the designer-inspired look you want to achieve from themes like Next Journey, Future Thinker, Thoughtful Living or Individual Mix.

Another tip: You can also use your dedicated Color Collection to inspire more than just paint colors! Look for similar hues in the upholstery, artwork, and other pieces you decorate with for a perfectly coordinated look. This will help you choose what best fits your home.

So I followed my above tip and went with Mink (HGSW2443) a color from the HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams Next Journey Color Collection.

A little back story…

Prior to moving into our cottage we looked and looked and looked…for solid wood cabinet for the kitchen.  My husband was willing to make cabinets but it sure would be quicker and easier for us to move in with some already built cabinets, that didn’t cost us an arm and a leg…but we just weren’t finding a thing.  One day I was driving through town and noticed a garage sale…I stopped and low and behold, God provided us with a perfect row of solid wood cabinets, granite countertop and a stainless steel sink for our cottage!  Whoop! Whoop!  I was beyond thrilled…might I add all for $35.  Happy dance, indeed!

I love sharing all of the details in our little place as well.  These are what make a place become home and you/your personality!  So many of my details are hand crafted by my husband which makes it even more special!  From the hand forged towel hook and hand forged pot rack/hooks… he made my open cabinets, my side cabinet created with the pipe (I love it)…to the light fixtures he made and was inspired to design.

Fast forward to now and it was fun to do a little small space kitchen renovation at the beginning of this new year. I love the outcome of the new kitchen cabinet paint color, as mentioned above.

Small Kitchen Ideas on a Budget

Tips when painting your kitchen cabinets:

1- Remove all doors from cabinet boxes

2- Remove all hinges and handles/knobs

3- Lightly sand what you will be painting (first picture shows you the process with wet paint!!!)

4- Clean off cabinets/boxes with a damp cloth

5- Paint with HGTV HOME™ by Sherwin-Williams INFINITY Interior Paint and Primer

6- Let completely dry for at least 36 hours before reattaching doors

7- Re-attach handles/knobs, doors and hinges

8- I chose to remove all hinges/knobs and spray paint those for a clean/new look as well!

I love the FINAL and so I want to show you a back to back Before/After set of pictures:

Thank you very much for sharing! One thing I find hard to get right is the balance between beauty, and functionality. My kitchen definitely is a “working room”, and I love cooking! But I need my mixing bowls, dry ingredients & spices, and kitchen utensils nearby when I cook, and it’s hard to keep everything nearby, without looking too unsightly. I keep my electrical appliances, like a waffle maker, blender, and food processor) in my cabinets, to keep my countertop clear. I had a renovation done a few years ago (repainting and reflooring), but I’ve always felt it needed a little more charm. Do you have any suggestions to add a little more bling, without going overboard with too much clutter?
