Sharing my best with you today –> hanging wallpaper tips and tricks PLUS a video!  This post was sponsored by Livette’s Wallpaper and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

I’m thrilled that wallpaper is quickly becoming a home decor trend!  So much so the first room in our new home I had to hang wallpaper on one wall in my daughters room. It’s thrilling for me to see her room come together as I’ve been planning this now for months!

hanging wallpaper tips

My generation remembers our mothers hanging wallpaper, borders and stenciling our bedrooms…but we also remember having to ask our friends for tips on removing old wallpaper – now new trends are making life super easy with the option of vinyl wallpaper!  Livette’s Wallpaper offers removable wallpaper, peel and stick plus traditional wallpaper.  I immediately fell in love with the Colorful Floral Nursery Wallpaper on the site but it just didn’t quite match what I had already bought for my daughters bedspread, curtains, bedding, rug etc…she gave me the option for her to tweak/personalize the colors and wow is it perfect!

Just a little glimpse into the final room!

Hanging Wallpaper Tips and Tricks

Before you start to hang wallpaper there are a few things you need to be sure you’ve gotten taken care of ahead of time!

  • Make sure your surface is clean, cry, smooth and free of any mildew, grease or stains.
  • Remove any loose paint and remove old wallpaper as well.
  • Store your wallpaper in the temperature conditions that replicate the final installation.
  • Stretch out your wall paper overnight, this makes it easier when hanging wallpaper – it won’t curl up on you!
  • If you’ve painted a fresh coat of paint – let the paint cure for 30 days prior to hanging wallpaper.Hanging Wallpaper Tips and Tricks

How to Hang Traditional Wallpapertips for hanging wallpaper

1- Prep your walls as mentioned in the first section.

2- Lay out your panels before you start to verify positioning of the wallpaper.  With Livette’s you give them your wall dimensions and window dimensions and then they send you the exact panels that line up perfectly with very little waste involved!  It’s amazing!

3- Do not start in the corner, start almost a panel in…draw a straight line with a pencil using a leveler to make sure your starting point is straight.  This is very important!  You will come back to the corner of your wall later.  Why?  Because not all walls are straight and especially at the corners!  You want your wallpaper to be straight!!

4- Place your glue or paste in the paint pan and using the paint roller, roll the wallpaper glue onto the first section of your wall.  Only paint the area of your first section as you don’t want this to dry before you can get to it.

5- Slide the first panel into place.  Starting from the top make sure it’s straight and leave an inch or two at the top and bottom for trimming.wallpaper removal tips

6- With your cotton gloves on, work your wallpaper to the edges to ensure you don’t have air bubbles.  Smooth the wallpaper from the middle to the outside edges.  If you have a seam roller, use that on the edges to get a good tight seam.

7- Apply glue to the next section, be sure to match the pattern on the wall at eye level and butt your seams tightly together.  Do not overlap, it’s to be installed side by side.Hanging Wallpaper Tips and Tricks

8- Using your damp sponge, go over your seams/wallpaper to ensure there is no glue left on the seams.Hanging Wallpaper Tips and Tricks

9- Using your razor blade (changing the blade for every cut gave us the best results) carefully cut out around electrical sockets, windows etc.  Also trim the excess wallpaper at the top and bottom of the wall.  You can use your straight edge to help give you a nice straight cut.Hanging Wallpaper Tips and Tricks Hanging Wallpaper Tips and Tricks Hanging Wallpaper Tips and Tricks

10- Continue the steps until your wall/room is complete.  Allow the wall to dry completely for 24 hours to ensure the wallpaper adheres properly.  Avoid any drafts and temperature/humidity changes during this 24 hours.how to get wallpaper off how to hang wallpaper

11- Avoid using harsh tools as it will scratch and damage your wallpaper.Hanging Wallpaper Tips and Tricks
