Floating Eggs Hands on Science Experiment –
Have you ever noticed that it is easier to float in the ocean than in a swimming pool?
The reason for this has to do with the difference in density between pool water and salt water. Simply put, salt water is more dense than pool water.
Color Mixing Science with liquid watercolors – This color mixing science activity is a more advanced version of a color theory activity I did with my kids when they were younger. This activity requires a great degree of fine motor control to get just the right color proportions.
Blubber Experiment – How do Animals Stay Warm?
Spider Web Hunt- This hunt is designed to look more carefully at spiders and the webs that they create. Together you will look closely, make observations, write details, compare and contrast webs. More than anything, you will learn more about these little crawlies all around our environment through a fun adventure.
Walking Water Activity – We are always on the lookout for simple science activities to do with our kids. It doesn’t get any easier than this walking water science activity! Kids of all ages will be dazzled by the magic of watching colored water move along a paper towel from a full glass to fill up an empty glass.
Tornado in a Jar – Both of my kids are fascinated by volcanoes, tornadoes, hurricanes, and so on. Since this week’s theme with our creative friends is science experiments, I thought it would be fun to do a tornado in jar experiment with them.

Dancing Raisin Experiment – I’ve done a version of this dancing raisins experiment with my kids a couple of times over the years. We initially did this activity as part of our discussions about states of matter. But it also works really well for a unit on density.
Learn Physics with Dominos – The line of dominoes is an excellent example of Newton’s 1st law. The law of motion says that an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted on by another force. The dominoes will stay on their edge forever as long as nothing disturbs them. However, if someone stomps too hard next to the line, blow on them, or touches it, one or more dominoes will begin falling and will create a chain reaction. Once the dominoes start falling, they won’t stop.
Color Changing Flower – I really enjoy doing simple science experiments with kids. They learn so much from the experiments and it gets them excited about science.
Ice Color Theory –
The experiment: freeze red, blue and yellow ice cubes (use food coloring).
Then place yellow/ blue, yellow/ red and a blue/ red ones into separate jars and let defrost.
What happens? What colors do you end up with? (can you see the green already forming in the yellow/ blue jar?)
Ice Ornaments – They are simple and OH SO CUTE: Ice Decorations. A fab, fun, easy, quick craft, that also teaches a tiny bit of science (the whole bit about water freezing).
This is a great STEM project for students. Students will learn about cause and effect as well as using the scientific method. The DIY lava lamp is a great way to explore the sense and help students develop their ability to observe.
Cress Heads – Cress Heads are such a CLASSIC Spring activity for kids – they are quick, easy and so so fun. Oh and they are quite inexpensive too!!!
Simple Science Sprout Heads – Such a fun way to explore the sunshine and how much our plants love to grow towards the sun!
Oil and Water Experiment – As we adults know, oil and water do not mix, but young kids will be amazed and delighted at the discovery. Transform this basic scientific discovery into art when you use watercolors instead of clear water for an enlightening oil and water experiment!
How to Make a Lava Lamp – Learn how to make a lava lamp in this simple tutorial. Have you ever tried the Lava Lamp experiment? It is one of the most beautiful and easy science experiments for kids requiring 4 simple ingredients.
Exploring Colors with Baking Soda and Vinegar – Combine art and science in this fun and easy activity for kids using baking soda and vinegar. It’s one of our favorite science experiments for preschool and kindergarten!

Engineering with Straws and Playdough – We both enjoyed the large-scale building experience that straws and playdough provided. My son began by building a basic structure he referred to as a “house.” He soon discovered the importance of symmetry and proportion in his design as he struggled with his structure flopping over. The amount of playdough used for support also mattered!
Hexbug Maze Challenge – In this STEM challenge, kids will create a Hexbug maze using straws, tape, and posterboard! It’s a super easy STEM activity to set up and gives children the opportunity to plan, build, and problem solve.

We are a husband and wife team, pairing our strengths together to teach our preschooler in the most fun and engaging way we possibly can. The mister is a high school educator at Northlake Christian school in Covington Louisiana and over the Innovation Center, which is all things STEAM. I am a SAHM that blogs pretty much everything we do in our little paradise, from what we eat, to where we travel to how we teach our little one. We hope you are inspired to incorporate STEAM into learning with your children.
