What an exciting season and congratulations as you embark on a new and beautiful journey of motherhood.
What to Wear for Maternity Pictures
As a photographer, we get the “normal” question, what should I wear for my maternity pictures! We usually make a few suggestions on tones and color coordinating then in the end the pictures turn out wonderful! But what is so different about maternity pictures?
I am a photographer for just about any type of picture you could think of? Do I favor some over others, absolutely! Maternity pictures happen to be one of my all-time favorites! From helping the mom to be choose what to wear for maternity pictures to the posing of my expecting mamas. I love everything about a maternity session!
Capturing a mother’s glow is so special but also watching the bond that she has created with this little growing miracle inside of her just gets me every time! There is something special about an expecting mother that just draws attention! Whether it be the outfit she chose that captures her perfect belly bump or the mamas that long to be in her position, which they someday will. Everyone wants a beautiful moment of attention!
When I am asked by expecting mamas, what should I wear I try to make my answer as simple as possible!
1- Long Dress or Skirt
I tell all expecting mamas; a dress is best but a longer skirt work well too! As Lauren McBride mentions – avoid strong colors for a dress/outfits!
2- No jeans or shorts!
3- Shoes Matter!
Thinking about shoes make sure they are cute! or….we can hide or take off. Why is this important? Because peoples’ eyes like to start at the bottom (shoes) and make there way up the body or vice versa.
4- Make-up
Don’t go over the top with make-up, we want you to look like you would any other day. I find that when we add more then what we would in a normal day, we over do the look we are going for and trying to capture!
5- Keep your Hair Down
Hair down is always best, whether that is curls or straight that is your preference.
6- Simple Jewelry
Don’t go over-the-top-flashy with your jewelry choices, or your nail colors! All too often mamas do this and they take the shine away from the focus of them and there special blessing on the way!
7- Be You!
Whatever you do, make sure it is comfortable for you! Read more here –> If you are wondering if you should do bare belly pictures or not for your maternity pictures.
I hope this helps you dress for your next session with success!
