Mississippi Gulf Coast Travel Guide
This past weekend my husband and I had the perfect getaway while visiting the Mississippi Gulf Coast. There are so many quaint towns, quaint breakfast nooks, great coffee shops, awesome museums and attractions to keep you busy for days!
I’m here just to tell you our experience and our highest recommendations keeping in mind it is all family friendly and fun not to mention relaxing.
Visit Mississippi Gulf Coast
One of the perks of traveling along the beautiful Mississippi beaches is you can snag a free travel app – My Gulf Coast – which will help you locate attractions, restaurants, shopping and other points of interest along the way. Along Highway 90 you will spot each location with a Shrimp Sign posted.
Did you know that there are 12 coastal cities and communities that make up the Mississippi Gulf Coast? That’s why there are so many great spots to drop in and visit. There are 62 miles of scenic shoreline – but that also includes inner bays etc. There are 44 miles of coastline in Mississippi! It’s amazing with gorgeous views no matter where you are!
So in reality you can drive it easily with a few stops in one day…although more time is highly recommended so you can pace yourself! Did I mention there is an endless bounty of seafood that is amazing, hence you’ll want to pace yourself along your travels! (eatmscoast.com can give you even more details on these amazing eats!)
Places to Stay: We stayed in Pass Christian at Hotel Pass Christian and hands down a peaceful and amazing place. The vibe, the atmosphere and the southern hospitality were top notch. If you are interested in staying in a different coastal town I recommend visiting gulfcoast.org for a bit more information on places they recommend.
Hotel Pass Christian sits parallel to the gulf coast beach while overlooking a harbor – each morning we woke up to beautiful blue skies and sunshine peering in through our windows.
Before we checked into Hotel Pass Christian we were honored to attend the Hancock Whitney Inaugural Splash Bash benefiting the upcoming Mississippi Aquarium in Gulfport! We had a blast – while seeing a sloth, taking pictures with an otter, eating delicious food from amazing places along the Gulf Coast and ending the night with a delicious Pop Brothers handmade popsicle. Hands down the Hancock Whitney Splash Bash was a fun night and I have to say the details that went into decorating and planning this event was amazing!
Things to do Along the Gulf Coast
Cat Island Coffee House – breakfast and coffee were amazing…not to mention the fact that it’s also a bookstore – I was in heaven at a coffee shop and my husband was in heaven at a bookstore! The PERFECT place for us!
Take some time to wander the streets in downtown Pass Christian – some great local shops, eateries and friendly people.
Spend the evening in Ocean Springs – one of the quaintest coastal towns along the Gulf Coast
We spent Sunday morning in downtown Bay St. Louis before we had to head home. Breakfast was at the Mockingbird cafe – a quiet spot and amazing food and their almond latte is one of the best I’ve ever had!
Fun things to do in Biloxi Mississippi
Grab an Attraction Pass so you can see multiple museums and attractions at a fraction of the cost!
Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum – super rich in history, we loved this spot!
Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art – hands down a fun art museum and we plan to go back one day and take a pottery class, how fun would that be?!
Biloxi Visitors Center – a beautiful place to visit, a great view of the lighthouse and I loved seeing the posters from the past shrimping festivals.
Have dinner at Biloxi White Pillars– a farm to table restaurant that is hands down a new favorite. The owner and head chef came to our table to say hi and the service was spectacular. The experience in and of itself was a highlight.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Beaches
As you travel highway 90 you’ll see beaches all along the way. There is a great walking path and some great views. I personally loved the beaches down on the west end where we stayed in Pass Christian, they were quieter and just seemed more serene. Although any combination with water and sand is relaxing to me!
Free things to do along the Gulf Coast
Highway 90 is a really beautiful scenic coastal route – be sure to travel the whole 62 miles as you’ll see some gorgeous homes and quaint coastal towns.
Stop at a harbor and get out and walk around…it’s beautiful and the boats can be massive and intriguing.
Family Friendly Things to do in Gulfport Mississippi
If you are looking for ideas in Gulfport there are some great spots that we’ve visited there as well. Including several family friendly aka kid friendly free activities and then the best Children’s museum – Lynn Meadows as well. You can see our Gulfport recommendations here — Things to do in Gulfport Mississippi.
Walk along the beach, put your toes in the sand and feet in the water.
Have fun as you explore the beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast!
