ISO in Photography
Are you struggling with your camera settings when taking pictures in low light? Learn ISO in Photography and how to choose ISO. First lets talk about ISO – do you remember ISO film? You would walk down the film aisle and have the choice of 100 ISO film…200, 400 and maybe 800 speed film. You could walk into a specialty camera store and get much higher ISO Film – but in my mind that was for the “professional” photographers who knew all of the right camera settings! Well ISO is just simply this…a sensor inside your digital camera that sense light. Thanks to technology we can change our ISO camera setting for each picture if we needed to (but don’t worry you don’t have to!!!)…unlike film days where you were stuck with 400 speed for at least 24 images, as a roll of film. What does ISO Stand For? Let’s define what ISO is by definition. ISO simply stands for the International Organization of Standardization, which is the main governing body that standardizes sensitivity ratings for camera sensors. In Digital Photography ISO measures the sensitivity of the image sensor. The same principles apply as in film photography – the lower the number the less sensitive your camera […]

The Basics of Photoshop: Photoshop 101
Learn the basics of Photoshop: Photoshop 101 if you will through this photography crash course built for you. This is a free tutorial when learning photoshop as a photographer or amateur. Follow this step by step guide to learn photoshop 101. The Basics of Photoshop: Photoshop 101 Step one: Opening a picture in photoshop. I know this might sound silly to some of you, but for those who have used LightRoom or another editing program, you might be sitting there wondering, “How in the world do I even get a picture to open!?!” If you are on a MAC you can simply drag and drop the image and it’ll open right up, easy peasy. If you are on a PC or don’t feel like dragging and dropping, you click “file” > “open” and locate the image on your computer then click “Open” or hit Enter. Step Two: Layers When you start out editing, sometimes it’s easier to go add a duplicate layer of the image that you are working on. The reason that I suggest this is because if you mess up, you can just erase or mask (I’ll teach you that later) that one part and start over there […]

Top 10 Winning Tips for Kids Sport Pictures
There comes a time when you literally have to step up your game to capture those special nail-biting moments from your kids’ athletic games. Your goal (no pun intended) should include producing as many shots as possible of your little one in action. At the same time, don’t forget those little details, because they all contribute to the fun of sportsmanship and the anticipation of a well-deserved WIN! Here are some pointers for the parents who want to be their kid’s MVP. Most likely your child’s game will be in the morning or mid-day. In that case, in the bright sun, set your ISO between 100-200. On cloudy days, bump it up to 400. Use a good telephoto lens. For most of the action shots, I use my 70-200. It’s a beast and you’ll need some arm strength, but hey, who doesn’t like some sculpted biceps? Other lenses I use are a 24-70 and of course, my nifty 50! Your shutter speed needs to be fast! If your shutter speed is too slow, you’re guaranteed to get blurry photos. Consider ISO 100, f 2.8, 1/6400 sec. If you can’t get a fast shutter speed, you might need to […]

How to Take Perfect Back-Lit Photos
Hi! I’m Lauren with Lauren Weeks Photography and today I’ll be showing you how I shoot my subject with light behind them – also known as a backlit picture. These are my favorite types of photos because I think shooting a backlit image is what makes the light look romantic and dreamy. So here goes! The main thing to keep in mind here is to expose for your subject. If you have a properly exposed subject, you have a beautiful backlit photo, and this is how I do it: 1- I almost always have my camera set on spot metering. What’s the difference? Spot metering basically exposes for the area you focus your camera on (the subject) and only that area. This is different than the matrix metering that takes the whole image in your viewfinder into account when exposing the image. I find that doing this always guarantees that my subject is properly exposed. 2- I make sure my ISO is exposed for the subject only. For example, if I have my subject in front of the light and everything around her is bright, but she is lighting darker, I make sure that I bump up my ISO a […]
