I just wanted to share with you all what I have found works for our little 18 month old toddler to keep her quiet in church. What we’ve done so far works for us, I really don’t think you will find YOUR perfect answer here on this blog post, rather I’m hoping to help you and maybe see if you can find some tricks that will work for you and your little one!
Our first goal for sitting in church during the preaching is for my little one to be quiet. I honestly don’t expect her to SIT the entire 45 minutes-ish…rather learning to be quiet. If she sits the entire time well then I just see that as a BONUS! When we first started with these we started it during a special meeting we were having at our church which was Sunday morning and Evening service followed by services Monday-Wednesday…I knew I needed some fun things and NEW things!!! It worked quite well for us and has ever since!
My Tips and What has worked for us!
1- Choose a bag… this bag is ONLY taken to church or your said location! Never use this bag or the things in this bag for any other spot…unless you’re in dire need of help!
2- Fun things. Choose things to put in this bag that your little one doesn’t get to do at home or in his/her normal everyday routine. Make it a special bag and one they know has fun things. If you allow them to do these fun things in the everyday it will not keep their attention at church.
3- Don’t have too many options in your bag. If you have too many options they’ll know that and go through each activity pretty quickly.
4- Change it up! -Don’t be afraid to change things out after a couple of months and find new things or replace certain items.
5- Fun Snacks- There are about 3-4 snacks I have found that she LOVES and so we save these for church time. They aren’t messy snacks so I don’t have to worry about her getting messy or making a mess in church…they are quiet and definitely a fun treat for her.
Did I mention I always bring a box drink??? This is such a treat because it’s full juice where as at home I water down her juice in her cup!!!!!
6- Timing of Each Item – Don’t pull out a new item until your little one is definitely done or over the previous activity. Stretch out the activity for as long as you can!!!!
Here is what is included in our bag for now…do you have more suggestions for us? OR suggestions for as she grows and develops into age 2 and 3 year old things?
