Are you priming your pump as an artist…as a creative…as a photographer…as a business owner…as CEO of your company.
As a photographer I know we wear many many hats in our job. As do most other careers, they fight against the same war.
But today as a photographer, writing to fellow photographers my question for you is…are you priming your pump? Do you have any clue what I’m talking about?
well pause with me….
some of the thoughts or questions going through your head at the moment…are they something like these….
I am spent and worn out….
I can’t keep on doing this…
I am worn out…I can’t even keep my head above the waters…
I’m ready to throw in the towel and give up…
Why in the world do I keep doing what I’m doing…I love it one minute and well the next minute…quite simply I hate it….
Reality is…we’ve all had these thoughts…every working human being that is…not just photographers.
In turn I’d encourage you to ask yourself these questions….
Am I energized? if the answer is no way-jose’…then you need to prime your pump.
Do I feel creative? if you are answering…seriously…I shoot at the same location and what seems the same outfits day in day out…then you need to prime your pump.
Are my clients wearing me out? if you are rolling your eyes and answering yes…then you need to prime your pump.
Should I quit and do something different in life? If you have had this thought…STOP because you need to prime your pump.
STOP…Just stop right where you are in your business and STOP. I didn’t say QUIT…I said STOP.
You need to seriously prime your pump. You need to reevaluate what you’re doing, how you’re doing and why you’re doing.
#1 Answer those three questions…What, How and Why. Taking some time to truly answer those questions will give you insight to you as a creative photographer and business owner. Write. Yes I know that doesn’t come easy to most, but get a journal a pen or pencil and begin to write. No one else has to read it, but you…so write. Jot down your thoughts, your motives, your goals, your ambitions, your desires and keep on going down the list!
#2 The second but most important is take time OFF. Rest your mind, rest your body and rest your soul. Study and research prove this…they prove everyone needs time off. Everyone needs a break…Your mind needs a sense of slowing down. Take some time to not be busy…being busy doesn’t always mean productivity. If you believe that being busy means being productive then you have believed a lie. It doesn’t…
If you don’t take some down time to prime your pump and be reenergized you will not last as a creative…as a photographer…as a business owner. I can’t say I have proven research to prove it…but I have testimonies of those who have come and gone in this industry…if you ask them why- it’s because they were spent…worn out…had no time for life…didn’t feel creative…didn’t see immediate results…weren’t encouraged…questioned why they even did what they did…it was a constant battle in their minds. They never took time to prime their pump…for themselves or their business or might you say clients.
