Today’s blog post is going to be straight forward and to the point: How to Start a Photography Blog

I’m going to keep it as simple and easy as possible…but I think every photographer should have a Blog.  Why?  Check out this article by my friend Jill over at Flourish.  Blogging for Photographers:  Why You Should Have a Blog.

start a blog

First.

Pick a Domain Name- See if it’s available here at Bluehost

This can be easy for some…and tricky for others.  You can use your photography business name, your personal name or come up with your own unique name.  Hopefully this won’t take you too terribly long!  If you are stuck, ask your family and friends to brainstorm with you or for you!

Second.

Host Your Site/Blog

Using Bluehost.  Here you can purchase your host which as you can see includes your domain name FREE.  This way you own your domain name.  So in my case it’s www.sixthbloom.com NOT www.sixthbloom.wordpress.com  or www.sixthbloom.blogger.com  TAKE Control and own your own domain name!  Keep it simple and easy for your fans to remember!!!

Hosting with Bluehost is smart because their 24/7 customer service is for the WIN.  If you’re like me and not that tech savvy…having a 24/7 customer service is top on my list!  It’s kind of like having a life line at midnight when you’re up working and everyone else in the world is asleep and your site goes down…what do you do?  Having the customer service is vital!  I speak from experience!!

I like to suggest the PLUS plan.  It’s still VERY reasonable to host but it really includes all you’ll need at this point and to keep you going without having to upgrade in just a few months!

Third.

Set up a WordPress Site.  Then install WordPress to your hosting site.  Here is a quick youtube video that can be of help, if for some reason this one doesn’t fit your needs simply go to youtube and search: How to Install WordPress on a Bluehost site.   You’ll get lots of results!!

Fourth.

Customize it to fit YOU.

This is where it’s fun and not to mention IMPORTANT! Why is it so important? Again this is where you can scream to your fans YOU.  What I mean by that is…scream to your FANS what you love, your personality, your likes and dislikes through this design and look of your blog/site.

Honestly there are so many AMAZING designers out there that design templates for these two blog frameworks…you could spend all day on google looking and oohing-ahhing over their work…so jump right on google and find that designer that makes you melt and go with their template!!!!!

If you have any questions along the way please email me or comment below!  erin@sixthbloom.com  I’d be happy to help with what I can!

Thanks for re-pinning this one, Erin! I have been blogging for the past year (expanding it this year) and I remembered you had written an article about a web hosting service (in addition to WordPress). I save your articles, but couldn’t put my finger on this particular one. Thanks, again!

These are really great photos! Sometimes, the best way to improve is to be inspired by othersSome other landscape photographers I also enjoy are: Max Rive, Mark Gray, and Antony Spencer. Here is a really cool link including those guys, and some more, for those who are eager to be inspired:http://www.adoramapix.com/blog/2016/11/22/top-10-landscape-photographers-to-follow-on-instagram/#.WFYrp6IrIRE
