How to Include Pets into Your Family Photos

How to Include Pets into Your Family Photos

This day in time, there are so many different family dynamics.  There are blended families, extended families, single-parent families, the list goes on.  The one thing that just about all family types have in common, is pets!

We have all had a pet at some point in our life.  Whether it was a dog, cat, frog, fish or even a tarantula; we have had something we once cared for.

How to Include Pets into Your Family Photos

Pets are a staple of any home.  They show us unconditional love.  Our children learn responsibility by taking care of them.  They are crucial members of our family.  So when it comes time to do our annual family portraits, why do we hesitate to include them?  They may not look like us, but they are a part of who we are, in a lot of ways.  So we should celebrate that! This can be done by simply having them with us.  Just think of the LIFE that they would bring to the memories being captured.

1 Include pets into your family photos:

Animals are natural beings and bring joy to life!  Imagine children at a normal photo session.  Sometimes, it is difficult to coax a smile out of them.  Even asking them to “say cheese” doesn’t work.  It doesn’t make you smile, you’re just saying “cheese”.  Try it while looking in the mirror!  Now, imagine those same kids’ faces light up with life and pure joy as they play with their puppy or kitten.  Picture them snuggling with them, getting a big wet kiss on their little cheek…you can’t get more genuine than that!  Now, those are memories worth putting on the wall.

2 Include them in a Major Life Event

Why stop there, though?  Life is always changing.  We are constantly moving, progressing and evolving.  Think of those major life events. Getting married, for instance!  Put your precious furr babies to good use.  Make them a part or your day.  The internet os flooded with online shops that cater yo animal-lovers of all shapes and sizes.  You can get them a wardrobe to match the whole family!  There are even tiny suits, ties, dresses and tiaras for your formal affairs.  I have seen signs, especially designed for Fluffy or Rover to hold/wear.  “My humans are getting married” is a very popular sign quote.

It is easy to overlook our sweet, devoted, four-legged companions during our plans for photo sessions or events, but I truly believe that we owe it to them, to participate.

3 Celebrate our 4 Legged Family members!

Going a step further, still, let’s talk about giving back to them in a most unique and special way.  Honor them by throwing them a custom birthday themed photo shoot!  Complete the theme with party hats, balloons, even a smash cake for them (animal-safe, of course).

I have personally witnessed several of my clients bring their pets along for a session.  Capturing those pets interacting with their humans, caused some hesitation at first, when they approached me about the concept of including them.  But let me tell you, it was well worth it! I have gotten some of the most real, honest-to-goodness candid moments during those sessions.  I highly recommend having your pet(s) be a part of your event, family photo session, or give them their very own!

All of these pictures are beautiful.

We tried to include our BIG German Shepherd, Max, in our family Christmas photo. It was a disaster. He kept trying to play with the grand kids. His head was turned in every picture. We will try again once he grows up a little bit and is better behaved.

I’m loving your posts! :). Animals are difficult to include in sessions but they can make for some really fun pictures that are truly treasured forever.

I’ve been screenshotting the photos from this post and sending them to my puppy obsessed friends lol. I love your tips on getting the pooches involved in photos. They are just as much part of the family as the humans, so we mustn’t forget them =)
