This Fun & Easy Science Experiment for Preschoolers or Kindergarteners is a fun STEAM activity for preschoolers that will enhance learning through the STEAM or STEM approach. Using borax crystals for a science project.
This is a fun STEAM Valentines Day activity since it’s a heart with borax crystals – but you can adapt this borax crystal science experiment into Christmas ornaments, shapes, snowflakes etc.
Why is Preschool Science so Important?
Preschoolers learn by doing, so hands-on science experiments will encourage your preschooler to DO something i.e. observe, ask questions, touch, smell, experiment. During this fun and easy science experiment for preschoolers I can say that my preschooler did all of the above… observed, asked questions, touched, smelled and experimented! It really is a lot of fun!
Allowing your preschooler o really get into science gives them the chance to make discoveries on their own. You as the parent/teacher can also ask them a lot of questions through the science experiment which will enhance critical thinking skills during such science activities.
Fun & Easy Science Experiment for Preschoolers
This science activity can be for all ages to enjoy but my preschooler loves this science experiment as it’s super easy and fun. Warning: This is a parent/teacher hands on science experiment as well!
Materials needed:
- Mason Jars
- Sticks/Pens/Pencils
- String/Twine
- Scissors
- Borax
- Water
- Pipe Cleaners
Step by Step Science Project Experiment:
Adjust the steps according to how many hearts you will be making and experimenting with. To get the science of this project to really create some great borax crystals we used the method below. To truly have a science experiment we adjusted the amount of borax in some of our jars to learn if more borax was needed for more crystals, less for less crystals etc.
1- Have a pot of water boiling on the stove.
2- While your water is boiling, create hearts/shapes using your pipe cleaners.
3- Attach a string onto your pipe cleaner heart/shape.
4- Once water is boiling fill your mason jar up with boiling water. Keep your preschooler at a distance when you are pouring this hot water into the mason jars.
5- Add 3 TBSP of Borax to every cup of water you pour into the jar
6- Whisk your borax in the hot water until it’s dissolved.
7- Place your pipe cleaner shape into your jar and attach to a stick/pen/pencil to set on top of jar and leave hanging.
8- Let your little ones observe…we left ours overnight and the next morning when she woke up that was the first thing she ran to see was her hearts and they were beautiful borax crystal hearts!
Have you tried this science experiment before? Have you done anything different we should try? We’d love to hear from you! Little Bins for Little Hands suggests adding food coloring to your solution, I think we’ll try that next time for some added fun!!!!
