How to Dye Easter Eggs with Shaving Cream

Dyeing Easter eggs is always a fun tradition in our family and this year we did a little science experiment with easter egg dyeing, to change things up, using shaving cream to create marble eggs.

Coloring Eggs with Shaving Cream Video:

Be sure to have your Hard Boiled Eggs prepped before starting this STEAM Science activity.  I did my eggs in my Instant Pot the day before!  Talk about easy and life changing.  If you have an Instant Pot check out my: Perfect Instant Pot Hard Boil Eggs.

We were inspired by Martha Stewart’s article on Dyed Easter Eggs Using Shaving cream.

TIP: I will warn you…it can be a little messy so have some gloves on hand and maybe even wear an apron or art/paint smock.  Definitely old clothes for the kiddos!  You’ll thank me later on this tip!  If you don’t wear gloves you’ll probably need these tips to help you get the food coloring off of your hands!

Supplies you need for Shaving Cream Easter Egg Art:

    • Vinegar
    • Hard Boiled Eggs (be sure they are cooled prior to doing this science activity)
    • Food Coloring
    • Shaving Cream
    • Toothpicks/ Spoon
    • Gloves
    • Glass dish

Shaving Cream Dyed Easter Eggs

  1. Place your eggs (as many as you’d like to do for this science activity) in a bowl and cover with white vinegar and let soak for 20 minutes.science activities for kidshow to dye easter eggs with shaving cream
  2. While eggs are soaking, squirt shaving cream and spread in glass dish.  (I used a glass casserole dish.)
  3. Place drops of food coloring in the shaving cream.shaving cream easter eggs dying easter eggs easter eggs with shaving cream
  4. Use a toothpick/spoon to try and get the food coloring dispersed in the shaving cream, this doesn’t have to be perfect.
  5. Once eggs are finished soaking, remove from vinegar and wipe off with a paper towel.
  6. Using a spoon (or your fingers with gloves) to nudge eggs through shaving cream to make marbled eggs for a unique dyeing Easter egg method.science activities shaving cream eggs how to dye easter eggs dying easter eggs shaving cream easter egg art
  7. Remove from the shaving cream and using a paper towel remove the shaving cream.
  8. Wa-lah you have beautiful shaving cream easter egg art!

The biggest question I’ve gotten is:  Can you eat eggs after dyeing them with shaving cream? – my response, why of course you can but…it will taste like shaving cream!!!!!  I suggest not, but that’s just my opinion!  I have seen many use whipped cream and we maybe trying that next.coloring eggs with shaving cream dying easter eggs shaving cream easter eggs

A Hands on Science Experiment for Kids

If you have been around me long enough, you know I’m an advocate of the STEAM process while learning.  See more here if you aren’t familiar with Everything You Need to Know about STEAM.  Hands on is where the science experimentation comes into importance in early education and these little minds.  how to dye easter eggs with shaving cream how to dye easter eggs with shaving cream

The process for STEAM Activities for preschoolers and their learning:

Investigate: Let your preschooler take some time to investigate the materials you are using.  I strongly advocate this for their learning as well as the stress level for everyone comes way down when they’ve had a chance to explore.

Discover: Talk them through the hard boiled egg process, soaking in vinegar, colors and shaving cream, drying and dyeing.

Connect: Connect colors, eggs and the materials to their world around them.

Create: It’s time to Dye Easter Eggs using Shaving cream art! steam activites for toddlers

Reflect: Now it’s time to TALK!  Get them to talk by asking them questions.  Such as…

  • How did the colors stay on the egg?
  • What was the importance of shaving cream when dyeing our eggs?
  • What made our eggs have marbled art on them?
  • Do you think it matters if we soaked our eggs in Vinegar first?STEAM science activities
