Bedtime Routine for Toddlers

toddler bedtime routine

As a mom of a 3 year old toddler we have grown to love our night time routine when it comes to winding down and relaxing for bed.  In my mom brain, I used to think, it’s 8:00pm it’s time to go to bed…lets go change and brush your teeth.  Yeh that wasn’t working, at all.  Raising my hand as guilty here…I had to learn to help my little one to relax and transition into the night time routine.Bedtime Routine for Toddlers

I read all of the books…the online articles…tried every lotion and product…until I realized her little mind couldn’t just flip a switch…she had to have a routine to help her transition.  Establishing and maintaining good sleep habits helps your child fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake up rested and refreshed.  It is also very healthy for their developmental growth.

So at a glance, here is what our bedtime routine looks like for my now 3 year old toddler.

  • Bath Time – what toddler doesn’t love bath time?  Yet the warm water relaxes and gets their little bodies soothed as well as clean for bedtime.
  • Brush TeethBedtime Routine for Toddlers
  • Get Changed – pajamas and diaper with a Sposie Diaper Booster Pad which holds a lot of liquid turning any diaper into an overnight diaper!  WIN!  I was over night time leaks and had to find a solution!  For overnight or long naps I found it to be a perfect fit…simply insert a Sposie Booster Pad into your child’s diaper and adjust as necessary for
extra protection. For a girl, just leave the insert in the middle of the diaper. For a boy, pull it to the front.  Available at Walmart, Target, and Amazon bedtime routine toddler bedtime routine for 2 year old

Bedtime Routine for Toddlers

With this routine I feel like it’s prepping her mind and body to know that it’s time to go to bed and sleep.  There are many nights she lays in her bed singing or talking quietly…but I know she’s relaxed and in good time she’ll fall asleep.  Her latest is wanting to lay in bed and read more books…that makes my mama heart happy…I can’t tell you how many nights in the last couple of weeks before I go to sleep, I remove books from her bed when she’s finally drifted off!
