5 Steps to Prep for a Newborn Session

1- Prep all of the traditional session workflow (i.e. formatting memory cards, charging batteries, packing camera bag, etc.)

2- Next I have a color palette in mind from my pre-session consult with parents based off of the colors in the babies room/their home. I have at least 3 backdrops picked out and setup on my beanbag. Then I have at least 2 wraps / props (headband, hat, outfit) combinations set aside to coordinate with each backdrop. I usually only use 2 backdrops on my bag, but I always plan 3 in case baby has an accident that makes one unusable.

3- Warm the room up to 85 degrees so it’s already warm when baby arrives.

4- Make sure I have all of my essentials in arms reach so that I never leave baby unattended on bag. (i.e. my posing towels, hand sanitizer, paper towels, wipes, props… anything I would need to use at any point during my session)

5- Make sure I leave enough time to have a few minutes to gather my thoughts. I usually go over my posing workflow in my head (I always start with the pose I’m most comfortable with which also happens to be my favorite and almost every baby likes – bottom up.)  Make sure that I remember any important poses/props that the parents have requested. Then, I ALWAYS take time to say a little prayer.

As a special bonus, I’ve included a full 15 item PDF checklist that you can download and print or save to your phone! Click HERE to Download it now and make sure you try this process before your next newborn session!
