If we as parents can truly be honest with ourselves we all love receiving. It’s in us to want. It’s the human nature. Why do you think we have to teach our children to share. We have to learn to fight against it that wants. We have to learn to enjoy giving and watching others receive. They say more is caught than taught. I have always heard this phrase but now with my little busy 18 month old toddler…I’m seeing it. Seeing it daily. She is only saying a few words…so it’s not what she’s speaking that has been caught, yet! However it’s what she’s doing that has already been caught. I ask myself how? She’s only 18 months old! Yet I see it over and over again things she does that she has watched us do. It has made me stop and think on quite a few occasions.
As we are in the “thick” of the season of giving and receiving we are choosing to begin to teach our little E now. Even though she’s only a little one and won’t remember this years Christmas we are starting early so that our actions portray what we want her to learn through the years. There are 5 reasons we’ve come up with on why we want to teach her to give…I know there are more ideas, I know there are parents out there who are a lot more creative than we are!!!! Share with us…we want to hear from you seasoned parents, we are newbies!
1- Be an example day in day out -this principle isn’t just about the holidays, it should be a daily life goal.
2- Make it a Goal to Give and Do for Others throughout the year.
3- Let each family member choose someone they want to give to and ask them why. Make it a time of discussion and encouragement of love and joy to those around you.
4- You can’t out-give and help them prove that!
5- Someone has given to us in our life times no matter your age. Talk about those times, reflect on those times and how now those times impact your lives and memories.
The ultimate goal is to set out to serve and impact others.
